This is a review of the CW show Arrow without any spoilers, i will give an in depth look on the show in my spoiler review in which you can acces by clicking here (if it does not work i have not reviewed it yet)
Arrow is the story of billionaire playboy Oliver Queen whom after a ship wreck spends five years lost on an island. When finally found he decides to take justice on his own hands and get rid of those who are poisoning his city.
This is an adaptation of the Green Arrow superhero, if you don't know who he is, he's basically the Robin Hood version of Batman. Of course the character has a lot more depth than that and fans will on hate on this fact but the show version of Green Arrow started of a lot like the Batman films.
You have mirror shots Batman Begins in the pilot. That says it all.
Stephen Ammel plays Oliver Queen and he started off weird or unsociable which worked but as the show goes on that totally disappears, which make sense in the plot as he get's used to civilization again.
Is the show any good?
Yes, it's as much as you can get from the CW. It's not the Green Arrow Smallville which you not have worked with this tone. This is so much better than the version of Smallville and probably better than Smallville.
I recommend it.
You don't have the bad CGI in this which i love.
But the show is in the CW, which i have nothing against apart from it being for teens. It's ok if the show is adressed for teens but some CW show have unbelievable dialogue: people don't talk like that in real life, every CW show has this. AMC does it right, so does A&E and rarely NBC does, CW never does it! When you get used to it, you don't care...
The cool thing about the show is that whilst he is being a vigilante, you get flashback's of Oliver's time in the Island, but the thing is, we know he spent five years on the island and we saw him escape so we know certain plans he has for escaping are going to fail which may add or take away the suspense. Oliver has the flashback's and they're all in chronological order and they pick up right from when the last one left off, i he just going to relive his whole time there?
The biggest problem with the show is that they never call him The Green Arrow, they call him vigilante. It's like The Walking Dead never saying zombies in season 1 which worked because we know they're zombies but Smallville never called Clark Superman and that took away the experience, they better call him that soon or i wont feel he becomes The Green Arrow.
Apart from these nitpickings, there are DC references in there, you see perhaps the origins of Deathstroke, some references to Green Arrow's sidekick, we get to see Deadshot (cooler than in Smallville) and there may be a tie in with The League of Shadows (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight Rises AKA whre batman became a ninja)!
Watch Arrow, it's great, you will like it. There are better tv shows out there for sure but Arrow's not bad at all. There are bad episodes and there are really great episodes.
So overall
"Arrow is a dark take on Green Arrow that despite being on the CW will entertain you every episode and get you hooked into the storyline."
As a series:
8/10 (Great)
