In the Superman reboot Man of Steel a young itinerant worker is forced to confront his secret extra-terrestrial heritage when Earth is invaded by members of his race.
This was perhaps my most anticipated movie of the year and it took a
while to accept that maybe I was just looking forward too much to it. I guess I
wanted to see a perfect Superman film and I got a great Superman origin story
which is not that good of a movie.
Henry Cavil is Clark Kent/Kal-El and I thought he did a great job and I think
that this movie unfortunately did not leave me happy with what I got but with
what I will get in the sequel. No matter how well Cavil played this role he
just wasn’t that developed and neither was Amy Adams which felt thrown in or Michael
Shannon who felt miss-used.
I really enjoyed this film but like The Dark Knight Rises it has it’s
flaws. There’s way too much action, some of it could have been cut out or if
Zack Snyder concentrated on the slow moments more it would not feel as though
it was an Avengers Superman film.
I also wanted to see more personality of Superman himself I felt I saw
Kal-El a lot but Superman, fortunately I do get that in the end, by the closing
chapters everything is exactly how I wanted it to be since the start but the
film ends shortly.
Kevin Costner and Russell Crowe did great in the movie; they really did
well with what they had and were by far the best part of this movie. The
problem is with such a great cast, there is a chance some of them will feel
miss-used.
I loved the action, the film has amazing visuals and not that much depth
it is my favourite film of the year so far because it is just the Superman film
we needed but I felt the odds were way too big for this film which makes me
feel “I want to see the sequel” not “This movie is absolutely amazing” like
Batman Begins did.
I don’t want this review to make the movie seem bad, I had a blast with
it but there isn’t enough character development as I wanted it to be, I wanted
more young Clark and less Lois lane which I felt should have been thrown in the
end of the film and then fall in love with Superman and I probably would have
given this movie a slightly higher grade which makes all the difference,
however, I still had a LOT of fun seeing Superman kick some Kryptonian ass.
In the end i enjoyed Man of Steel a lot but instead of being amazed i saw a three hour trailer for Man of Steel 2.
So overall
“Man of Steel may not be the movie you want or expect but with amazing
visuals good acting and little underdevelopment with its characters it does
become the Superman movie we all needed, and thankfully by the end, Superman is
awesome again. Zack Synder's best film"
