In World War Z United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to destroy humanity itself.
The trailers for this movie made it look so terrible that I really was not looking forward to this film in particular but I came out of the theatre and I really enjoyed myself.
World War Z stars Brad Pitt and I think that works really well because his character isn’t developed but the fact that Brad Pitt is in the film makes you care about him even when there’s not much reason to.
One of the things I really like about the film is that it shows the first days of the outbreak and how everyone was coping with the zombie apocalypse which I really enjoyed.
Another thing I liked is that World War Z is very self-aware. It knows it’s not a great deep movie and it’s not trying to be and that’s the film’s charm.
The zombies looked too CGI some times and I guess that it took away the intensity for me, on the trailer they look terrible but whilst watching the film I had no sense of danger when all they showed were the zombies pilling on top of each other. I did, however, love the scenes where they are all trying to keep the noise down but there are a couple of zombies and they have to take them out which I thought was awesome and the movie doesn’t have a lot of that.
Brad Pitt’s family were absolutely useless, they gave him a reason to fight for but I did not care about them at all.
I know the film is based of a novel and honestly I like the fact that it isn’t the same because the novel has the potential to be a great film but I like seeing new stories and the fact that this is the most original film we’ve had so far apart from This is The End just makes me not care whether it follows the book or not. Jurassic Park didn’t.
So overall:
“World War Z is a self-aware zombie film that does not try to be great but entertains you during its whole running time.”
7.5/10 (Good but not Great)
